Wes Newton

For Wes Newton - the future is bright... he is one of the good guys on the PDC circuit but he is now intent on turning all that promise into big results. .

The Lancashire Lad is determined to mix it with the best and start delivering tournament victories over the next couple of years.

In June 2007, Newton reached his first ever PDC Pro Tour Final at the Players Championship in Hayling Island. He fell at the final hurdle, beaten by Terry Jenkins, but it is surely a sign of things to come….and after a disappointing 1st Round World Championship, he started 2008 in much better form - reaching the semi-finals of the UK Open North East Regional tournament.

Now is the time for Wes to start building on a solid platform... and that’s exactly what he is determined to do.

“It is great to receive Unicorn’s support and recognition. I have come a long way in a short time and this deal will help me to achieve my goals... winning major titles and being in the world’s top 10.”

Unicorn chairman Edward Lowy was heavily involved in Newton’s acquisition to the biggest name in darts. “I saw Wes play in the Las Vegas Desert Classic in 2005 and was very impressed. I thought he was tremendous again in 2006 at The Mandalay Bay. I introduced myself and it went from there! He is very talented, young, vibrant and works very hard at his game.”

Newton has a taste for the bright lights of The Strip in Vegas - reaching the semi-finals twice. In 2005, he was beaten by ‘The Power’ that is Phil Taylor….and in 2006, having qualified again, he beat Wayne Mardle, Mick McGowan and Chris Mason, before losing a close semi-final to Unicorn stablemate John Part.

Newton carries the nickname ‘Av It’ - born from playing with friends when he spent time in the south of England and he is now a familiar face at all the big events.

He has played in four World Championships at The Circus Tavern and in the 2006 tournament at Purfleet, Newton was unlucky to lose a 2nd round thriller 4 sets to 3 to Kevin Painter. He reached the final of the big Canadian Open in Saskatoon in 2004, again losing to Part.

He has played in all the ‘Major’ TV events but picks out the World Matchplay in Blackpool as his favourite - not surprising when he is the home-town boy!

Newton picked up the darting bug from dad Colin and by the time he was 16, he was winning local league tournaments, before graduating to county level with Lancashire.

His younger brother Dale is just starting out on a darts career as well - and the pair certainly couldn’t have better practice facilities. Wes explains: “My mum and dad bought a log cabin for the back garden and it is now completely fitted out as a proper darts room, so it is perfect to put the hours in.”

He is a huge Liverpool fan and enjoys taking in a movie.

He currently works as an accounts assistant but dreams of being a full-time professional on the PDC circuit... with the backing of Team Unicorn, that day surely isn’t far away.

Consistency is the key for the likeable Lancastrian, because Newton knows that if he can produce his ‘A’ game, he can beat anyone in the darts world.
