Williams
Ricky Williams is one of the new breed of darts young guns
hoping to make it big in the sport...
Young, good-looking and he throws a decent dart as well!
The teenager comes from the same stable as Unicorn Maestro
James Wade and is managed by Jason Thame, so he has the best
guidance, help and support, as he sets out on his new career
in the PDC.
In fact, Wade, Thame and associate Will Lazar are also helping
to sponsor Williams - putting money back into the sport, by
providing funds to help the 18-year-old play the circuit.
The deal with Unicorn will guarantee he has the best possible
chance of making it in the ultra competitive world of top
flight darts.
Williams first came to prominence in June 2007 at the UK
Open Finals in Bolton, where he won three games and narrowly
missed making it through to the third day, when he lost 8-7
to Liverpool's Lee Palfreyman… but enough people
saw the potential and now it is up to him to deliver.
"I am ready for the challenge," he said. "It
will be a big learning curve for me but I look at what James
Wade has managed to achieve in a short space of time and that
is an inspiration for me."
He added: "I know the next couple of years will be
a big learning curve for me and I have to be patient. Over
the next 12 months, it's all about getting the experience
by playing all the tournaments and I am sure that I can make
good progress in the PDC Order of Merit."
Ricky's initial target is to establish himself on the
PDC circuit and then make a real push to get in the world's
top 50. He said: "There are so many good players out
there... I just want to be up there with them and I want
to reach a big TV event in the next two years!"
He started playing when he was just 8-years-old, played for
Hampshire Youth and also Super League darts, before he decided
to take the plunge with the PDC.
His sporting career could have taken a different path, because
he is one of the best in Britain at 10 Pin Bowling... it
wasn't so long ago that Ricky was ranked as one of the
best young bowlers in England. He still plays for enjoyment
but his top priority now is darts.
Ricky practices with James Wade when time allows, because
he also works in the building trade, as he tries to build
himself a career in darts.
"This is the time to be in darts," he said. "For
someone of my age, it is a massive opportunity to do something
with my life on the big darts stages all over the world and
to be involved with a company like Unicorn gives me even more
belief that I can succeed."
Ricky Williams has the drive and the ambition. He has now
been handed the best chance of becoming a big player in the
world of darts.
