Petersfield Academy member Jack Marriner made the 5 hour trip to barnsley last Friday for the ITV4 Grand Slam qualifiers in Barnsley and the Under 21 World Championship last 64 stage.

Jack was able to miss the preliminary round and so went straight into round 1 where he was drawn against Ian Lever, where Jack was unfortunate to lose 4-2. Jack conceeded that nerves got the better of him and the thought of everyone back at the Academy supporting him put the pressure on.

The evening concluded late into the night and the 4 qualifiers for the Grand Slam were Justin Pipe, Wes Newton, John Henderson and Mark Hylton.

Saturday morning came and Jack was to prepare for the day ahead and the U21 last 64. For Jack this was the competition that had real significance for him, having won the Brighton Qualifier against his Academy stablemate Ryan Groves.

Jack’s form would suggest he would do well, but Jack wasn’t so lucky on the Saturday and was drawn in 1 of the 2 preliminary rounds of the competition (due to the PDC entering more players). Jack was drawn against Dan Dean and quickly went into a 2-0 lead. Dan Dean came back strong though and eventually won the match 4-3.

Jack went into the weekend having never played in a profesional tournament and had to play 2 in the space of 24 hours. He should be very proud of everything he has achieved in such a short space of time since he started playing darts only 18 months ago.

Hampshire will have a player to support in the Unicorn Under 21 World Championship final (which is being played just prior to the main World Championship final on January 3rd).

Andover’s Arron Monk (son of Colin Monk) who was seeded 3rd in the Under 21s and he now faces number 1 seed and world number 31, Holland’s Michael van Gerwin.

Everyone at the the Petersfield Academy would like to wish Arron all the best for January. Jack now goes on to play in the Untouchables Exhibition on December 11th at the Pyramids in Southsea where he is guarenteed to meet 1 of the 4 seeds, Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade, Simon Whitlock or Mervyn King, and we are hoping Jack will live up to his potential and give whoever he plays a scare.

Next Saturday the 20th November will see the 2nd Annual Petersfield Under 21 youth Singles at Petersfield Social Club which is open to anyone between the ages of 10 and 21. Entry to the tournament is £3 per player with registration opening at 11am, we would be pleased to see as many people there as possible.
