Last weekend saw the Southern Qualifiers for the Unicorn Under 21 World Championships, with a 1st prize of £10,000 and a PDC Pro-Tour card entry for 2011 for the eventual winner.
The Petersfield Academy had 4 members who fell within the age range and wanted to enter. Zak Fullick and Liam Bonner tried at the Bournemouth Qualifiers but were unlucky to be eliminated in the first round. Ryan Groves and Jack Marriner went with 3 Academy committee members to the Brighton qualifiers and faired better.
Jack and Ryan cruised through the preliminary round with 4-1 wins each. Their second round games were won with the same ease which then brought on the semi finals for both players. Ryan passed his opponent off with ease winning 4-0 and securing his place in the final. Jack had a harder time in his semi, losing the two opening legs. He quickly found himself on the back foot, but he won the third to go one behind. He then lost the 4th and found himself one leg away from being eliminated, but he re-found his earlier form and rattled off 3 legs on the bounce with some clinical finishing, setting up an all-Academy final.
Jack started the final the same way he finished his semi final and went into a quick lead, Ryan grabbed a leg back but it was too little too late and Jack went on to win 5-1 and book himself a place in the last 64 of the competition.
Jack now travels to Barnsley on the 6th November for that stage where the international qualifiers and 8 seeded players join the competition and play down to the last 2 who will then play their final immediately before the main world championship final on the 3rd January at the Alexandra Palace.
I hope everyone will join me in wishing Jack all the best for the next stage and we will keep you updated on his progress.
