Super Smith crowned Gibraltar Champion!

It's been a long time coming but Michael Smith is back in the winner's circle!

The talented Team Unicorn star has won the latest prestigious Euro Tour event - The Gibraltar Darts Trophy - after a thrilling victory over Mensur Suljovic in a dramatic final on Sunday.

It is Smith's first tournament win since September 2015. He pockets £25,000 but more importantly this will be a huge confidence boost for the rest of the year. He knows that he has under achieved over the last 18 months. Hopefully this victory will help the Unicorn ace take the next big step up.

"I'd forgotten how to win and what that winning feeling was like, so this is very special for me," he said. "But it's important that I kick on from now and make sure this becomes a regular feeling!"

The win takes him close to a place back in the world's top 10. It was indeed a huge weekend for the St Helens star. A fourth Euro Tour title and he sailed close to the wind all weekend in Gibraltar, four of his five matches in a deciding leg!

Six 180s and a 100 average saw him past Christian Kist in round two.....then a 14 darter in the deciding leg saw Smith past Dimitri van den Bergh in their last 16 all Unicorn clash. The Young Belgian had beaten former Gibraltar champion James Wade 6-5 in the previous round.

Smith then saw off Rob Cross 6-5 in the quarter-finals and followed that with a thrilling last leg victory over top seed Peter Wright in the semi-finals, when he hit another final leg maximum before D10 saw him through.

The final was terrific.

Finishes of 74, 108 and 80 saw Smith race into a 3-0 lead. He then missed darts to go 4-0 and 4-1 in front and Suljovic stormed back with four consecutive legs to go ahead.....Smith levelled and then came a moment of magic from the Unicorn man as he nailed a fabulous 132 on the bull to break the Suljovic throw and lead 5-4.

The Austrian was sat on 56 for go ahead himself. Smith threw for the match and made no mistake, winning on D10 to complete a 6-4 triumph with a 97 average.

A fresh start for Michael Smith and onwards and upwards as he targets a first TV 'Major'.

Unicorn's Ian White reached the last 16 but went down 6-3 to James Wilson.

Meanwhile there were also four more events on the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour at the weekend. They were won by Nathan Aspinall, Robert Rickwood, Peter Jacques and Luke Humphries.
