What a moment for 20-year-old Arron Monk.
He is the first ever PDC Unicorn under 21 World Champion.
Monk is celebrating the biggest moment of his life – beating Michael van Gerwen by 6 legs to 4 at the Alexandra Palace!
What a performance from the Team Unicorn youngster, who pockets £10,000 for his victory but it is the label of being a World Champion that will count for so much more!
“It is a fantastic feeling,” said Monk. “I have been dreaming about this since I qualified and it means so much to me!”
He added: “I know I can play at the highest level and I want to use this victory as a springboard for the rest of 2011.”
It was Monk’s finishing that won the day! He hit six doubles from only nine attempts – a check-out success rate of 67 per cent.
Monk raced into a three leg lead, breaking the Dutchman’s throw and in leg three, he hit back-to-back 180s!
Van Gerwen got back into it with a 104 finish but Monk made it 4-1, before the young Dutchman mounted a challenge.
He won three straights legs to level the final and put some pressure on Monk.
But the Unicorn starlet was up to it when it really mattered.
He nailed a brilliant 121 on the bull to go within one leg of the title and then a third 180 took him agonisingly close…..double 4 won him the Under 21 World Championship!
It could be a career changing moment for Arron Monk
