REMINISCING ABOUT THE REEBOK

Posted by Sid Waddell at 16:00 on 12th June 2007 in UniBlog

Phew!!! I am sitting in my Pudsey garden in 78 degrees of balmy heat just shaking my head in wonder at the great darts fest we had at Bolton.

Keeping tabs on 170 plus darters was difficult and doing 26 hours of live telly was invigorating but it was hour by hour a pure gas.

Looking through my tatty water-spotted notes, here’s what jumps out off the pages…

Colin Osborne, slim as a rake, ex yo-yo champion and international table tennis star, taking big scalps. His lady wife was tearing her hair as Col just failed against the lightning fast Vincent Van der Voort.

Phil the Power smacked in a cool nine-darter and sent Rod Harrington screaming like Sidney in banshee mode on the commentary. Sensationelle!
Then boxer Amir Khan showed up to support Phil. Phil’s heart rate DROPPED from around 124 to 118 when he threw against Barney – he must have pure ice in those veins. My monitor went up to 131 just as I was being interviewed by Dave Clark for Sky Sports News. Mind, I probably go over 160 at peak times on commentary when the fun kicks off.

Four of the cast of Coronation Street showed up for a few jars and a laugh only to be UPSTAGED completely by John Gwynne who reeled off stories on telly about teaching one of them at grammar school. John is a frustrated thespian if ever I saw one.

Best crowd placard was definitely VANTASTIC as the two Dutch lads went off in the brilliant final. I wish I had said it first.

The secret to Barney’s brilliant form was told to me by his excitable manager, Ed de Veer. ‘Raymond must relax and enjoy his darts. Against Taylor he must not expect to lose.’ And the rest is history. Once Ray got to 8-4 in his quarter final against a tired looking Phil, he began to have fun and produce genius darts. He took out Lloyd fairly easily and then did a complete cool conquering number on Van der Voort in the final. Also, his use of the Taylor stacking method of attack on the 60 bed is now superior to the maestro’s.

So now the theme for the next six months to Ally Pally is set. Can van Gerwen get consistency into his flashy genius? Can James Wade and Adrian Lewis add self belief to their electric talent?

Believe Sidney, we darts fanatics have never had it so good.

BELLIES AND BULLSEYES IN STORES

I have just heard that cardboard cut-outs of The Geordie Lip will soon be appearing in branches of WH Smiths and Borders bookshops. It’s all to publicise my book Bellies and Bullseyes, which has taken the book trade by storm. You can take part in competitions that could win you a day at the darts with Sid! Maybe you could get to carry my backpack containing my make-up and throat sweets…

Hi Sid

I've just been reading BBC's 606 darts pages & the teletext on ITV & Sky about who the 10 greatest players are of all time.
However Sid most of the names on the list are good players but not the best.
So Sid, Stuart P & John G, can you put your top 10 greatest darts players up on here you can pick any from the 1930's to uptodate, with reasons for there top 10 place & how they changed the sport of darts.
I look forward to your views on the Greatest top 10 ever.

My Top 10 would be as followed.
1. Phil Taylor, won most of darts title both BDO & PDC) 180 out of 200 just the best.
=2. Bristow & Lowe, for taking darts to a new level in the 80's one of them or both reached the BDO world final from 1978-91 & John again in 93.
4.Barney,Since moving over to the PDC he has shown he is a class player.
5 Jocky Wilson, Twice world champ in 82 & 89, always gave Bristow & Lowe a great game.
6.Rod Harrington, would have been world champion, if not for the super Taylor, won the Matchplay twice the next best comp after the world champs.
7.L Rees, the best welsh player ever & the 1st ever World Champ in 1978.
8.Dennis P twice world champ in 91 (BDO)& the 1st PDC one in 94, still a force in the sport.
9.Bob Anderson won his only world title to date in 1988,Bob was a force in the late 80-early 90's & a former NO1.
10.Colin Lloyd, Won both the Matchplay & Grand Prix & a future world champion on his day he is a class act, more to come from the Essex man.

Hi Sid

Seeing you are a expert on Darts history I just wondered if you might know where I can find the history of the London region of the News Of The World Championship?
My Uncle did enter it & won a set of sliver darts, however we are trying to find out where he finished for our family history.
If you have any idea where we can find out this info Sid we would be greatfully
Many thanks

Diamond Dave

Webmaster why does it take Sid John & Stuart weeks sometimes months to answer people's letters/blogs on here.
Surely they could answer mayber every 2 weeks or at lease once a months.
We love what the experts have to say, just wish it was more often!

Sid has asked me to suggest that Diamond Dave contacts Patrick Chaplin about the London News of the World Championships. There is a weblink to Patrick in the links section of this website.
