Unicorn Feather Dart Flights

Up to the year 1949 feather dart flights were constructed exclusively of a wooden 'spigot', upon which feather wings were stuck. This arrangement was never entirely satisfactory, because wood, being a natural product, is subject to shrinkage and swelling according to the humidity of the atmosphere and thus the shank of the spigot, which enters the dart body, was almost invariably either too tight, or too loose. Consequently, the fitting of feather flights to darts remained an irksome and unsatisfactory operation.

In 1949 we invented, patented and introduced our now famous 'Adaptor' feather dart flights, in which the 'spigot is made into two parts, namely the screw threaded plastic Adaptor itself which, being unaffected by atmospheric conditions, is always a perfect fit in the dart body and a wooden stick, which is a force-fit in the Adaptor and carries the feather wings.

So complete was the acceptance of our Adaptor flights that within a few months of their introduction players refused to use anything else and the flight with a wooden spigot became a thing of the past. For this reason we now make the whole of our extensive range of feather dart flights with the plastic Adaptor as standard, but we still list feather flights on wooden spigots, which can be supplied to special order.

Unicorn feather dart flights are made in our own factory, where all operations, including the sorting, washing, dyeing and drying of the raw feather, stripping from the quill and shaping the wings with precision cutters, fitting to the shaft and binding, are performed by skilled operatives under expert supervision. Unsuitable feathers are ruthlessly rejected and only the best part of each feather is used, whereby sturdiness and uniformity of the wings is assured. The utmost care is taken to ensure that the wings are mounted truly and squarely. Each flight is individually inspected before being allowed to pass as an absolutely first class, hand made, English feather dart flight, of a quality which cannot be surpassed.
